Prayer in the Spirit
But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
Many misinformed teachers have told their students that Paul did not encourage the people to speak in tongues—but that is not so. Paul encouraged them to speak in tongues but he asked that they do it in decency and in order when in public meetings.
Praying in the Holy Spirit builds us up with our most holy faith—this type of faith is pure and holy because it comes directly from God.
When we pray in tongues it is a prayer that we do unto God—it is not for men to understand. When God prays through us we are praying mysteries that no man can understand except God, who gives the interpretation.
Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 14:18 that he spoke in tongues more than the other believers—this indicates that he did it often.
He says, “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.” In our private time we should allow God to pray through us so we will pray His perfect will. And because it is God doing the praying, we know that His Word will accomplish all that He sent it forth to do.
